(1) Program Introduction
The Construction Management Program was formerly called Investment Economics program. It was one of the first programs approved in the General University Undergraduate Program List after the 1988 Higher Education Reform, and changed its name to Construction Management. It is the School’s earliest program, which also admits more students than any other programs. In recent years, along with the industrialization, urbanization and ecological development in China, this program becomes more diversified and internationalized. Our outstanding faculties come from Northwestern University, Tsinghua University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, etc., making great efforts to combine construction management with Economics and Finance, especially in the direction of physical investment. A large number of top-tier talents have been absorbed into the decision-making and management circle in domestic and foreign construction investment and financial industry.
(2) Objectives and Methodology
This program takes advantage of the core strength of the Economics and Management Department of the University. We are aiming at cultivating management-related talents with comprehensive skillsets involving Economics, Management, technical expertise in construction, basic related law and regulations, professional ethics, creativity and international perspectives, who will succeed in areas such as decision-making and management in construction-related investment and financing, market research and feasibility analysis, sustainable building evaluation and information technology application.
(3) Programs and Key Modules
The modules offered by the program can be divided into 4 categories: Economics, Management, Engineering, and Law, covering the whole process and multiple detailed blocks of construction-related investment management; students benefit from practical activities, such as internship, course practices, and graduation projects, for employment and further education.
Our undergraduate program offers key modules in: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Management Principles, Accounting, Financial Management, Operations Research, Project Management, Project Evaluation, Project Evaluation, Project Cost Management, Project Finance, Project Risk Management, Project Bidding, Construction Technology and Organization, Basic Building Information Modeling (BIM) Technology, etc.; and optional modules in Investment, Finance, City and Real Estate Management etc.
Students enrolled in this program need to earn a certain number of credits to receive a bachelor’s degree in Management.
(4) Features and Advantages
This program takes advantage of the core strength of the Economics and Management Department of the University, at the same time, stressing on a foundation of construction technology courses and a combination of this knowledge with Economics and Management insights. Our students graduate with a coherent knowledge structure of Management, Economics, Engineering, and Law, which make them competitive in the arena of construction-related decision-making and management on investment and financing both at home and abroad.
We have hired faculties from renowned universities in and outside China to build a research direction of “construction-related decision-making and management on investment and financing in a sustainable way”. They have participated in more than 10 national, provincial, and ministerial projects and published more than 50 high-level scientific research papers in well-known academic journals at home and abroad; they have successfully realized the transformation of scientific research to teaching to guide students to participate in a number of national college innovative projects, helping them win many awards in the National College Entrepreneurship Competition and Engineering Competition.
In addition, this program is open to domestic and international cooperation and exchange opportunities. We have established our relationship with universities like the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the University of Florida. Starting from January 2014, our outstanding undergraduate students have had the opportunity to study in the Department of Architecture and Real Estate at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
(5) Employment and Further Education
Our graduates are high quality talents with both economic management and engineering technology expertise. Their employment rate keeps at a relative high level, covering areas such as banking, government investment and construction management, real estate development and construction, engineering investment and consulting, etc. In recent years, a growing number of our students were recruited by National Development Bank, Poly Capital, China Construction Investment, COFCO Group, Sinochem Group, Baosteel Group, Vanke shares and other outstanding enterprises and institutions; each year, many graduates choose to seek further education in well-known universities both at home and abroad, such as Columbia University, the Northwestern University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Tsinghua University, receiving praise for their academic performance and comprehensive skillsets.
